Barbados Crop Over Festival‘Too much of anything even if it is good, can be bad for you, but not tonight I want more sweets… No, change dat, I want more Popsicle’. That was only one of the sentiments heard from the crowd that erupted in jubilation when it was announced that David ‘Popsicle’ Hall was the 2011 Monarch in the MQI/Banks/LIME Pic-O-De Crop Competition.

Popsicle’s compositions Pick A Fair and Don’t Sell Cornell, the later tells of his inheritance of a donkey with strict instruction, no matter how hard things get financially don’t sell your donkey Cornell or as Popsicle sings very tongue in cheek, ‘I ain’ selling my ass’.

Popsicle hails from Halls Village in St. James and is a landscaper by trade. He has been performing Calypso for about seven years and is a member of the House of Soca, the tent that was commonly referred to as the House of Kings. In recent years the tent has met with lean times but thanks to its Manager Ms. Sharon Carew-White, a rebuilding process began. The efforts have paid off. The tent was cited as having the best all round presentation for 2011 which culminated with the crown coming to the Queen’s College based tent.

Popsicle takes home the Kia Sportage customized by Freekz Customz valued at BDS$103,700. Expectantly he had a comical reaction upon receiving the keys to the car. ‘I might sell it ‘cause I drive a truck already and if I keep the car the truck might get jealous’. He also receives BDS$10,500 in cash.
