The following criteria will be applied when evaluating and assigning points for bands being judged in all categories.
a) Portrayal — 40 POINTS The representation which depicts a theme in a costume Band.
b) Craftsmanship — 20 POINTS The level of skill shown in the creation and construction of the costume used in portrayal. c) Presentation—10 POINTS The impact of stage presentation by costume bearer(s) including use of the stage, execution, technique, management of movement, interpretation of theme and evoking crowd response.
d) Originality—15 POINTS Inventiveness in the use of materials and portrayal of concept, that is, the use of theme should be unique and should not have been seen before.
e) Visual Impact —15 POINTS The effective use and coordination of colour and design in the presentation of the bands. Prizes can be awarded in the following categories: GENERAL CATEGORIES - 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. a) Historical A costume Band depicting as its main theme any factual or documented event or era from the beginning of time. b) Traditional A costumed band, which depicts folkloric aspects of our local or regional culture. c) Topical A costumed band depicting local or regional current events, activities and opinions. d) Fantasy A costumed band whose main theme and portrayal is based in the imaginative or dream world. e) Community Costume Band (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) A band based in a specific community or representing a School, NGO or sporting organization. Bands in this category are encouraged to utilize all aspects of Barbadian and Caribbean culture and heritage in the design of their costumes. f) Advertising An entire costumed band, which advertises or promotes products or services. (No cash prizes shall be awarded in this category). Awards in the order of Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates will be presented. g) Community Tee-Shirt A band based in a specific community or representing a School, NGO or sporting organization. A band in which, the tee-shirt is used as the basis for the design of the costume. The band shall portray a theme. (No cash prizes shall be awarded in this category). Bands will only be permitted to compete in this category for one year. SPECIAL CATEGORIES: a) Most Colourful Large Band (1st prize)
b) Most Colourful Small Band (1st Prize) The most successful selection, arrangement and use of colours in a costumed band for the maximum visual impact. c) Robert Weekes Award “Best Festival Designer” (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) The designer who best conceptualizes the design, choice of materials, structure, decorative aspects in the presentation of individual costumes and costumed bands and scores the most points. This prize will be judged over 3 competitions (Junior and Grand Kadooment and Kings and Queens of the bands) accordingly: Participation 10pts (per event) Stated criteria 70 pts TOTAL 100pts d) Best Individual (Male and Female) (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) e) Winston Jordan Award - Flag Person of The Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) The individual making the most impressive and spectacular use of the flag in relation to the band and scoring the highest points based on the criteria for Presentation. f) George Dear Award – Best Band on the Road (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) The band which best exemplifies the spirit of Kadooment through attaining the highest points scored in the portrayal of theme, visual impact, originality on the road. g) Presentation of the Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) The band which best displays the following in their presentation: execution, technique, management of movement, interpretation of theme, utilization of stage and the evoking of crowd response. h) Best Overseas Band The most successful presentation by a band based outside of Barbados of more than 75 persons, when judged by the stated criteria. (A plaque will be the prize in this category. All bands participating will receive a certificate of participation.) i) Barbados Manufacturers Association - Brands of Barbados This award is offered to a band which best depicts aspects of Barbados’ culture. Prizes will be awarded in both the small and large band categories. j) HIV/AIDS AWARD (1st prize) A participating band or individual costume, which most effectively highlights the awareness of HIV/AIDS through its portrayal.
k) The 35th Anniversary of Crop Over Award The band that best depicts the various aspects of Crop Over through the years: Band, Section, Individual Costume. TOP AWARDS a) Small Band of the Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) Costumed bands of between 75 and 300 members attaining the highest aggregate of points on Kadooment Day, when judged in the stated criteria 8 a-e and reflecting Barbadian & Caribbean culture to a minimum of 50% of its visual representation. b) Large Band of the Year (1st, 2nd, 3rd prize) Costumed bands of 301 or more members, attaining the highest aggregate of points on Kadooment Day, when judged in the stated criteria 8 a-e and reflecting Barbadian & Caribbean culture to a minimum of 50% of its visual representation.
