Buggy Nhakente, Barbados’ Reggae Artiste of the Year 2010, has been bringing his reggae flair to Barbados’ Crop Over music scene for the past 10 years.
Being primarily a Reggae Artiste, Buggy Nhakente has successfully fused his signature Reggae style with the traditional melodies of calypso/soca, a great example of which can be heard in the song “Brush Off” which contains the authentic Bajan sounds of the tuk-band. Buggy is no stranger to fusions as he is a founding member of Hit Island Studios who have pioneered many of the musical fusions that have become common place in Barbados today. Also an accomplished songwriter, having written all of his songs in his home genre of Reggae as well as all of his Crop Over offerings, Buggy has also skillfully written songs for fellow soca artistes.
Buggy Nhakente has gone from being the featured artiste on many songs by established soca artistes like Mr Dale, Donnella and Bruce Chandler, to serving up a ragga –soca style of his own in hit songs like Hypocrites, Outside Lady, and What’s Cookin’, to name a few of his solo tracks. It is with these three ragga-soca hits that Nhakente has the distinction of being the only artiste who was featured on all three of the award winning Red Boyz productions. After the successes of Hypocrites and the at times controversial “Outside Lady”, Buggy decided to face the Party Monarch Judges for the first time in 2008 with his song “What’s Cookin’” and that saw him receiving a well earned place in the Party Monarch Finals on East Coast.
Each year you can look forward to Buggy adding his special distinctive touch of Reggae infused soca to the Barbados Crop Over Festival, leaving no doubt that this young vocalist/songwriter, who is a blend of rich Caribbean roots and artistic talent, is attracting great opportunities that have him destined for greater musical success.
