For years there was the talk in Calypso circles of the ‘share holders’and to a lesser extent some suggested that it was the same way in the Junior Kadooment. That was until this year when the new kids ‘showed on the block knocking over the perennial winners.
Of the fourteen bands which paraded from the Lawrence T. Gay Memorial Primary School and the carpark nearby at Tyrol Cot, six were a part of the NCF Costume Design Programme and they were the big winners. The NCF objective to involve children in the creation of their costumes, from concept to manufacture bore sweet fruit for those that participated in the workshops and the rewards were deserved.
The children, radiant and bubbly, dressed in the eye catching fabrics and designs to depict the various themes, frolicked behind the music trucks as if mimicking their seniors who pass along the same route for Grand Kadooment. Inside the walls of the stadium Deacons Primary, St. Stephens Primary, Hill Top Preparatory School and St. Mary’s all impressed. In the Historical category Deacon’s Primary claimed the top spot while St. Stephens Primary was adjudged to be the best in the Topical category followed into second place by Deacon’s Primary. There was a first place for St. Mary’s Primary as they won in the category of Folklore and the winner enclosure also welcomed Hill Top Preparatory which stood ‘head of the class’ as winners in the Environmental category.
The Barbados Manufacturers’ Association offered the prize for reflections of Brand’s of Barbados and it was Deacon’s Primary that gladly accepted. In the Couples section 7 – 10 Hill Top Preparatory settled for third place but in the Individuals 7 – 10 St. Stephen’s swept first and second place. The rewards kept coming for Hill Top Preparatory taking second spot in the Individuals 11-14. Two more first places wrer capture d by Deacon’s Primary and St. Stephen’s respectively claiming the Inter-American Year of Culture Award and the Best School Band.
On this day the accolades flowed for all of the children, their costumes and the designers. Ask most and the response is unanimous that real costuming is seen on Junior Kadooment Day and the children are the Kings and Queens of all Kadooment. (See full results below.)
